Not All Certifications Are Equal

Finding a nationally certified personal trainer isn’t difficult these days. The industry has come a long way since I started over 12 years ago. What hasn’t changed is that quality is still worth looking for.

Certification doesn’t make a good trainer, no more than medical school makes a good doctor. Likewise, five certifications don’t make one either. A nationally certified personal trainer is just a certification issued by an organization that is recognized or available nationally.

I think I read a little while ago that there are over 200 personal trainer certification organizations that offer certification online. I’m sure more than some of the trainers taking these could be called a nationally certified personal trainer.

You should look for a certification issued by an accredited body. The last time I checked, The American Council on Exercise, The National Strength and Conditioning Association, The National Athletic Trainer's Association Board of Certification and The National Council on Strength and Fitness were the only four that were accredited. Accreditation comes through The National Commission for Certifying Agencies, and offers a basic assurance of quality screening.

While quality certification is important, experience and success rate are also relevant. However, without the proper education, experience can be hard to convert to valuable lessons learned. The point is, both are required. Having a bunch of initials after your name means you’re really good at taking tests, not necessarily really good at training people.

A good trainer will be able to listen to what you want from your health, advise you as to what is realistic and what will be required. Then be able to work with whatever personal limitations you may have knowing what is correctable (trainable) and what is medically limited. In order to do this, he or she must have a thorough understanding of human anatomy and movement, as well as a complete picture of the clients lifestyle and habits. Being able to work through what is workable and assist what is not, while bringing the client safely and without injury to a higher quality of life with more mobility, strength and flexibility.

Do you need a nationally certified personal trainer? Yes, The cost is significant and you only have one body. Your health is too important to take lightly. Make the effort when finding a personal trainer to feel confident about your choice.
