Practical weight training delivers results faster then any other equipment.

Why are free weights the best choice for women?
How does weight training develop your body into an injury resistant unit?

Sidebar:

Throughout the discourse on this website, free weights and weight training will be mentioned quite a bit. You should assume I'm including dumbells under the banner of those word phrases. So the mention of, "free weights are the best investment", would imply the total sum of barbells, dumbells, benches or squat racks with an Olympic bar, etc.

I know, I've heard it before,"They're dangerous", or "Weight training messed up my back". Or,"Yeah, I used to workout until I hurt myself using free weights."

Did you catch the key part of that quote? "I hurt myself."

Don't fall prey to fitness popaganda. Can you hurt yourself weight training? Of course. Can you hurt yourself using an automobile?

Interesting.

I guess we assume a certain amount of responsibility when we get behind the wheel? Just be responsible and honest with yourself about what your capabilities are. (Don't try to do more than you're able to control.)

Accept that weight training is a skill, you have to start somewhere, and you can't make up for years of neglect by trying to do too much too soon.

And most of all, don't mistake safety, for not having to do anything.

I have written a separate page on why practical weight training is better than machines. I highly recommend it for anyone who may considering buying a home gym.

The Best Set Up...

Adjustable bench For those of you that feel training at home is more practical, I'm going to show you how to set your home gym up as a practical weight training center. This will be simple, functional and effective.

It will take up more space than the number 2 and 3 exercise equipment choices, but it's also more effective.

Don't let the names of any of these pieces intimidate you. I assure you this equipment is useful for everyone.

Here's your shopping list.

Believe it or not that's it! That's all you need to be completely "free weight functional".

Naturally there are other things you could buy to increase functionality, but with what's listed above you don't need them.

If you combine that with one or two pieces of cardio and a dumbell set, (or power blocks) then you'll have all you will ever need. Of course if you add more, results may be faster or easier, but this system will out do any multi gym out there.

Other things I recommend you add: (If your budget allows)

Now you're talking! That's a fat bustin', muscle buildin', time bomb waitin' to explode!

I'm getting fired up just thinkin' about it!

Practical weight training is the most effective tool in the fitness arsenal.

The perfect place to jump into our next topic...

DUMBELLS!

Not just for wall pounders any more.

“A man would do nothing, if he waited until he could do it so well that no one at all would find fault with what he has done”. -- Cardinal Newman
